*A LENGTHY TALE*
All you Utahn's know the craziness of yesterday's storm....
Those who are unaware, let me explain by giving you a run-down of my day {I'll try to leave out expletives!}:
3:00 p.m.- I drove down to Kensie's school {with the 2 boys} to pick her up for dance class.
3:30 p.m.- We walked out to the car and it was a sudden blizzard. Our clothes were completely wet from just walking through the parking lot. I called Matt & decided not to go to dance class, and let him know I was on my way home.
3:31 p.m.- I drove a few hundred feet and had to pull over to the side of the road {or what I thought was the side}. It was a complete white-out. I've never experienced this in my whole life living in Utah. The wind was blowing so hard {70 + miles an hour I found out later} that it was completely impossible to see.
3:32 p.m.- I decided {along with many other cars} to stay where I was until there was better visibility.
5:45 p.m.- After 2 hours the kids just could not "hold it" any longer. I was cursing my windshield wipers, which were completely frozen and were doing me no good. I tried to get out once to clean them off, but it was no use. I finally made the decision that if anyone passed me going toward the school I would turn around and follow them. A car came not too long after. I had to roll down my window and drive with my head out the window to see anything at all {which was not much}.
6:00 p.m.- We made it back to the school {thank heaven} where teachers were waiting to comfort my bawling kids and get us situated. There were many children and parents there also. I learned that kids were stuck on buses and were trying to get back to the school {some were stuck on the buses until after 9:00}. I was SO glad that I picked Kensie up & she wasn't stranded somewhere or at the school by herself.
6:15 p.m.- We set up camp with the rest of the first graders in a teacher's room. The faculty came around with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, apples, crackers, and milk. The teachers were GREAT! AMAZING! How can we ever repay them? Kensie was having a blast playing with her friends and Lincoln was following her everywhere. We watched movies, played games, and had lots of treats. I only had one bottle for Jackson and one diaper, which worried me.
8:30 p.m.- After talking to many of the other SunCrest parents I learned that the road up to our house was open {it had been closed since the storm began} and I just knew I had to try and make it home. I bundled up the kids and got them in the car with some help from Brian Smart {fellow BHS alum...yeah, we're tight now. I see him often at the school driving his pliggy van & toting his 7 kids!}. The kids were bawling again & I had them saying prayers to calm us all down & help us get home. The weather was not any better. As I got out on the main road all the cars in front of me were turning around before they got to the intersection that leads up to SunCrest. I almost turned around but decided to keep going.
9:00 p.m.- I made it home. It was a total miracle. I was alternately praying and cursing the entire way. No cars were in front of me so I had no way of knowing if I was going the right way. But I made it. I got a call from one of the SunCrest parents who left when I did & he told me that they closed the road again before he could get there. I barely made it. Students and teachers had to sleep over at the school. Kensie was disappointed this morning to learn that she'd missed out on a fun night, but I was SO GRATEFUL that I wasn't stuck there with the kids. Total Miracle.
I didn't really sleep much...I kept thinking of those poor kids on the buses.

are you kidding me? Crazy about the blizzard and sleepover at the school.
Brian Smart really has 7 kids?
that is madness! what is it with this winter? it has been so relentless. i bet that storm is the one they are saying is going to hit us sunday, they are already telling people to stock up on stuff. expletive, expletive, expletive.
Not fun. I cannot believe that!! I'm glad you and the kids were able to make it home safely though, and just in time!
That is so crazy that we live maybe an hour away from each other and we get less than an inch. Bad timing on my part when I called...so sorry. The mixer is going to the KA mixer hospital...for free. See you tomorrow? We're shooting for 4:30 or 5.
Oh, Darla, you were a victim of that whole mess! In the car with kids! What a pain! Our power was out all afternoon and evening, and as a result there was a power surge in our router and I can no longer get the internet on our desktop! WHAT A PAIN! I have to use Steven's laptop at night, or sneak onto our neighbors wireless internet when they're online. Errrr!
But I'm laughing at the Brian Smart connection. Do his kids go to your school? Yes, Vranes, it's true, 7 kids! I've run into him and/or Kelli a few times at Target/Pottery Barn/Old Navy. Extra friendly he is. I'm glad he could help you!
yes, his kids go to the same school. it's fun to see him. EXTRA friendly!
